New Book, Two Michigan Events: 1 Girl Revolution Teams Up with Author Joel Walkowski 💙🦁✨

1 Girl Revolution is excited to share a project close to home: local author and comedian Joel Walkowski has written Honolulu Blues: How Loving a Losing Football Team Created a Winning Man – and we’re partnering with him for a couple of cool events coming up. This book is one of the most powerful, honest, and funny books we’ve come across in a long time. (Fun fact: Joel is also our founder Kate’s cousin, which is how this collab came to be!)

On the surface, it’s about a lifetime of loving the Detroit Lions – the wins, the losses, the almost-wins that became massive losses. Underneath, though, it’s gritty and real. It’s about addiction, trauma, mental health, and what it actually takes to become a winning human even when the scoreboard says otherwise. Joel’s a comedian too, so don’t worry – this isn’t just heavy. It’s raw and real, and really funny. You will laugh. You might cry (either remembering a Lions loss, or because of the truth in these stories).

Honolulu Blues drops July 14th. Pre-order it now, or grab it the second it’s out – Amazon, Barnes & Noble, everywhere books are sold. Go to bigwalkowski.com for more on the book and Joel.

Come Meet Joel in Person

If you’re in Michigan, come meet Joel in person and hang with the 1 Girl Revolution team. At two upcoming events, Joel will read excerpts from the book, tell some stories, and sit down for a conversation about football, family, addiction, recovery, and why he’s convinced the Lions made him a better human.

As it says on the cover of the book:

“The story of the Detroit Lions is the story of being human – carving your own path out of the ruts of the past and accepting that you don’t have to win to be worth rooting for.”

Put these events on your calendar, pull out your favorite Lions gear (only if you feel like it), and come party:

📍 Barnes & Noble — 396 John R Road, Troy, MI 48083 🗓️ Saturday, July 25, 2026 | 2:00 – 3:00 PM

📍 Schuler Books — 2513 Jackson Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 🗓️ Wednesday, July 29, 2026 | 6:30 – 8:00 PM

Grab the book. Come to one of the events. You won’t regret it! 💙
