Erica’s Story: Protecting Our Children from Child Abuse

“I got a call from Wyatt’s father saying he had been rushed to the ER,” said Erica Hammel. “It can happen to anyone.” Erica’s son Wyatt was rushed to the ER on November 1st, 2013, because he had been shaken by Erica’s ex-husband’s girlfriend.

Wyatt is a survivor of Shaken Baby Syndrome and is now 6 years old. Erica has dedicated her life to raising awareness about child abuse and working to pass “Wyatt’s Law” in Michigan and other states, which would create a registry of convicted child abusers and this registry would be available to the public, just like the sex offender registry is. Child abuse is reported every 10 seconds and 5 children die a day from abuse in our nation. It’s about time we did something about it and this 1 Girl Revolution is leading the charge with Wyatt’s Law.
