Letter from the Founder of 1 Girl Revolution

I have worked in public relations and media for over 15 years. I studied Public Relations and Political Communications at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland and had hopes of becoming a political commentator. After studying politics and working in politics and PR in Ireland and then in Washington, D.C., I became disheartened and frustrated – because I started to see how often women’s voices and their stories were ignored and marginalized, and when they were covered by the media, their stories and voices were politicized or made divisive. 

When I moved back to Detroit, I wanted to do something to change this, I wanted to be a part of the change I was so desperate to see in the media and I wanted to do something to highlight the stories that I was seeing that deserved to be told and hoped that these stories might inspire other women and girls to change the world through their lives too. When I moved back to Detroit from D.C., a friend gave me a parting gift that would end up changing my life – a book about the city of Detroit. As I began to read it, I stumbled upon a page about Detroit’s motto (written in Latin by Fr. Gabriel Richard): “Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus.” This translates to: “We hope for better things; It will rise from the ashes.” The moment I read this, a light bulb went off. Women and girls are the most resilient beings (“rising from the ashes”) and it is women and girls that are giving us hope and changing the world every single day so we can “hope for better things.” That is the moment 1 Girl Revolution was born. 

1 Girl Revolution is founded on a few simple beliefs:
Every woman has a story.
Every woman has a voice and that voice deserves to be heard.
Every woman has the power to change the world through her life. 

Every woman can be a 1 Girl Revolution!

When I was a little girl, I was taught that I could be anything I wanted and that I had the power to change the world through my life. No matter what happened to me or what happened in my life – chronic health issues, bullying, changing schools, family struggles, my own hardships – I was taught to rise above the difficulties and shine my light everywhere I would go. 

Now I’m striving to be the light that shines upon the stories that deserved to be told and to be heard. There is so much division and darkness in the world today, and so much that needs to change in our world, but I see in these women and girls the change we need, in the smallest corners of the world, that have the ability to inspire others. We have the power to be a beacon in the dark world, bring people together, and to be the change that we want to see in the world.

Women are the strongest, most resilient, powerful, courageous beings in the world. We truly have the power to change the world – but we have to see it, believe it, and choose to be the person we were created to be. Only then can we be the change we want to see in the world.

I am so excited to share 1 Girl Revolution with you and I hope that you find courage, strength, passion, perseverance, and inspiration through these women and their stories, just as I have. 1 Girl Revolution has changed my life, and opened my eyes and my heart in so many ways – and I hope these women and their stories do the same for you. 1 Girl Revolution continues to grow and evolve, and I am so excited to see what the future holds.
